Overview
The Cisco VPN Client provides direct access to the CMU network while connected
to the Internet via a non-CMU Internet Service Provider. This can provide you
with access to the Microsoft Exchange server, secure servers/subnets, and other
network resources.
Installing
-
Close any open applications that are currently running on your
computer.
-
Insert the
"Cisco Systems VPN Client 4.0.2(A)" CD into your CD-ROM
drive.
-
Click the
"Start" button, and then click "Run."
-
From the Run dialog that appears, click the
"Browse" button.
-
Select your CD-ROM drive from the drop-down menu located near the
top of the window that appears, single-left click the "vpnclient_en"
file, and then click the "Open" button.

Click the
"Ok" button from the "Run" dialog to begin the
installation process.
-
From the
"Welcome to the Cisco Systems VPN Client 4.0.2 (A)
Installation Wizard", click the "Next" button.

Next, carefully and completely read the
"Client Software License
Agreement of Cisco Systems." If you agree to the license agreement,
click the "I accept the license agreement" radio button and then click
the "Next" button. If you do not agree to the license agreement, you
will not be permitted to install the VPN client and will need to click
the "Cancel" button.

The next screen prompts for a destination folder to which the VPN
Client files will be installed. As the default destination folder is
suitable, click the "Next" button.

Click the
"Next" button to being the copying and installation of
files.

After the installation is complete, click the
"Finish" button on
the "Cisco Systems VPN Client 4.0.2 (A) has been successfully
installed" window. Click the "Yes" button if you are prompted to
restart the computer.
Configuring
-
Open the VPN Client by clicking the "Start" button, select
"Programs" ("All Programs" for Windows XP users), select "Cisco
Systems VPN Client", and then click "VPN Client."

Once the VPN Client is open, click the "New" Button.

On the "Create New VPN Connection Entry" window,
fill in the fields according to the table below, making sure the "Group Authentication" option is selected.

Click the "Save" button.
Connecting
-
Open the Cisco VPN Client, if it is not presently open, by clicking
the "Start" button, select "Programs" ("All Programs" for Windows XP
users), select "Cisco Systems VPN Client", and then click "VPN
Client."

Select the CMU VPN connection by single left-clicking the
connection.
-
Click the "Connect" button to connect to the VPN.
-
When the "User Authentication for CMU" window appears, enter your
CMU global id and password into the appropriate fields, then click
the "Ok" button (See image at right). If you do not know your global
id or password, please contact the Help Desk at (989) 774-3662.

Once authenticated, a message stating, "Welcome to the Central
Michigan University Virtual Private Network" will appear. Click the
"Continue" button.

While connected to the VPN, a locked yellow padlock icon will appear
in your system tray (Indicated in image at right).

Disconnecting
-
Double-click the yellow padlock icon in the system tray.

From the VPN Client window that opens, click the "Disconnect" button
to terminate the connection to
the VPN.

After the VPN connection has terminated, you can close the VPN Client.
