Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) can create and maintain
Web
sites that are hosted on the RSO server (RSO home page:
http://www.rso.cmich.edu). Before
creating pages be sure to read and follow the
CMU Web Policy.
Here's what you need to do, in 6 easy steps:
1. Read the criteria for RSO Web sites.
To learn what the criteria are, visit the page:
http://www.rso.cmich.edu/how.htm. If your organization meets the
criteria, proceed to the next step.
2. Request an NT account for the student who will be
maintaining the RSO site.
Only one student, with the approval of the faculty advisor, will be
given access to the organization's Web. This student must have a valid
CMU email address and an NT account. To set up an NT account, call the
Help Desk. (774-3662). The Help Desk will provide you with an initial
NT password. You, yourself, must now change this
password before you will be authorized to access your RSO Web.
Have the Help Desk walk you through this step, or visit the site:
https://myaccount.cmich.edu/home.asp.
3. Request an RSO Web.
Now it is time to ask IT to set up a Web. Visit the site:
http://www.rso.cmich.edu/request/request.htm, fill in the form, and submit
it. IT will set up an empty Web using the name you requested.
4. Obtain access to the RSO Web.
To access the RSO Web, the faculty advisor and student who will be
maintaining the Web need to be added to a user group for that
particular Web. IT requires written authorization from the faculty
advisor to add a student to an RSO Web group.
Request RSO user group
changes by sending a request to the Help Desk. (Email
helpdesk@cmich.edu or phone
774-3662.) IT will inform both the faculty advisor and the student
when access has been granted.
5. Log into your RSO Web.
After access has been granted, you can log into your RSO Web.
Your RSO Web location is:
http://www.rso.cmich.edu/<yourRequestedName>/
where <yourRequestedName> is the one you provided in step 3.
Both the student and and the faculty advisor have access rights to edit
and create Web pages for your RSO organization.
To access your RSO Web space, open the Microsoft FrontPage
application. (FrontPage is available in campus computer labs. Faculty
can obtain a licensed copy of FrontPage by contacting the Help Desk.) On the FrontPage menu bar, select File > Open Web. For the Web name,
use the URL:
http://www.rso.cmich.edu/<yourRequestedName/
You will be asked for a login name and a password. Your login name is:
central/<globalID>
where <globalID> is your
Global ID.
For the password, enter your NT account password.
(See step 2, above.)
"Why can't I log in?"
If you have tried to log in and cannot, check the following:
- You have established an NT account via the Help Desk.
- You and your advisor have contacted IT to give you access to
the RSO web.
- You are typing central/ before your Global ID in the
login name field.
- You are not "locked out" of the system. If you have tried
unsuccessfully three times to log into your Web via FrontPage,
you will automatically be locked out. You need to contact the
Help Desk (774-3662) to unlock your account.

6. Create and maintain your RSO Web site.
Now you can create your Web site. Name your home page default.htm
or default.html. Note: Your rso.cmich/<your-rso-site> Web pages are on the "live"
site! Any changes you make to a page and save will instantly be
viewable by the public. And remember, in the ever-changing Web
world, there's nothing more annoying than a site that says "Last
updated 1996." Keep your site up to date and check often for broken
links. Upload the revised pages just as you did the original pages.
"Why doesn't 'Publish' work for my RSO pages in FrontPage?"
If you are working on www.rso.cmich.edu/<your-rso-web>,
publishing won't work. Publishing means copying from one site to
another -- you can't publish to a site you are already working in. Just
use File > Save. If you are working in a local copy of your RSO
site, then copying to the
www.rso.cmich.edu site, publishing WILL work. |
[ 7. Changing the student who maintains the Web
site. ]
If a different student is selected to maintain the site (only one
student can have access), repeat steps 2, 4, and 5, above. The
previous student's access will then be denied.
