Follow these procedures to place telephone calls from CMU campus telephones.

Note! There will not be a second dial tone after dialing 9 for off-campus calls. To assure yourself of disconnection of a long distance call, hold down the switch hook for five seconds before placing your next call. Otherwise, your first call will be placed on hold and you will continue to be billed for that call.

Using Administrative (Unrestricted) Phones

  • To reach information / operator:

    • For a local operator, dial 9 + 0.
    • For long distance directory assistance, dial 9 + 1 + area code + 555-1212.

  • To dial direct:
    dial 9 + 1 + area code + the seven-digit number.

Using Residence Hall, Campus Apartment, Family Housing, and Restricted Administrative Phones

Note To place directory assistance or direct-dialed calls from a residence hall, single student apartment, family housing, or other restricted phone, you must use a CMU Calling Card or an authcode obtained from Telecommunications. If you are using an authcode it can only be used from a departmental telephone.

    • For a local operator, dial 9 + 0.
    • For local directory assistance (Mt. Pleasant, Blanchard, Breckenridge, Coleman, Midland, Rosebush, Shepherd, Weidman, and Winn), dial 1200 and follow directions on back of CMU Calling Card.
    • For long distance directory assistance, dial 8 + # symbol (wait for tone) + CMU Calling Card number or authcode + # symbol (wait for tone) + 9 + 1 + area code + 555-1212. A flat rate is charged for all directory assistance calls.

  • To dial direct:
    Dial 8 + # symbol (wait for tone) + CMU Calling Card number 0r authcode + # symbol (wait for tone) + 9 + 1 + area code + the seven-digit number.

If you are using a calling card to place a call and our operator services vendor does not accept your calling card number, dial 9 + 0 + 0 and wait for the operator. The operator will place the call for you.

Transferring Incoming Calls to Another Campus Phone

  • Press the switch hook momentarily and release. Wait for special dial tone. Dial last for digits of desired station. When party answers, announce call and hand up. This will connect the incoming call with the desired party. If the station is busy or does not answer, depress the switch hook twice and the original party will be back on the line.

Establishing a Conference Call
(standard desk and wall phones for administrative and campus apartments only)

  • At least two of the three parties must be on campus. Place the original call on hold by pressing the switch hook once momentarily. Wait for special dial tone. Dial the third party's number. When third party answers, press the switch box once momentarily and all three parties will be connected.
