To provide an additional level of security for your password, Information Technology is implementing a security question and answer for your email/NT/dial-up account. In the event you forget your password and want to reset it at the My Account Information site, you will need to answer your security question.

Below are some commonly asked questions about this new functionality.

Do I have to set up a security question and answer?
No, but we strongly recommend that you do. If you ever forget your password, you will be able to reset it on the My Account Information site by using your security question and answer, along with part of your social security number and your date of birth. If you don't have a question and answer set up, you will need to call the Help Desk to have them reset your password for you.

Where do I set up my security question and answer?
Log into the CMU My Account site (https://myaccount.cmich.edu/) and select the Security Question option. Select one of the 8 pre-populated questions or enter your own question. If you enter your own question, type a question (of less than 100 characters) that will act as prompt for an answer that only you could know. Then enter the answer (of less than 50 characters) to the selected question.

Be sure to remember exactly how you type your answer -- if you need to reset your password in the future, you will have to enter the security answer exactly as you typed it here, with matching spelling and punctuation. Then click the Submit button. That's all there is to it.

What should my security question be?
That's up to you. We provide 8 questions, or you can enter your own question. Choose your question and answer such that it is not easy for anyone else to guess the answer. For security reasons, if you opt to enter your own question, we recommend that you avoid questions such as "What is my pet's name?" which many other people might be able to answer.

Do I need to remember both the security question and the answer?
Once you set your security question, you do not need to remember the question; we will remember it for you. However, you must remember the answer to your security question. Make sure that you remember your answer exactly as you entered it. You will be required to match the spelling and punctuation of this answer in order to reset your password in the event you have forgotten your password.

How often can I change my security question and answer?
You can change your question and answer as often as you like, but, remember, you will only need it in the event that you forget your password and have to reset it.

What if I forget my security answer?
If you forget your answer but know your password, you can just log into the My Account site and reset your question and answer there. If you don't remember your password or your security answer, call the Help Desk at (989) 774-3662.
