Before downloading Netscape Communicator with WS_FTP, you must first have a connection established to the CMU Network. To connect to the CMU Network from off campus, you must use Dial-Up Networking.
- Make sure you are connected to the CMU network.
- On your computer desktop, click on the Start > Programs > CMU Network.
Double-click on WS_FTP to start the WS_FTP program.
- Two windows will come up, WS_FTP32 and Session Profile. In the Session Profile window go to the Profile Name box and click on the arrow that is pointing downward to expand the list of options. Find “Netscape” on the list and click on it. Next click on the
OK button. If “Netscape” is not listed as an option, click on the New button. In the Profile Name box, type “Netscape”. In the Host Name box, type “ftp.netscape.com”. Leave “Automatic detect” as the Host Type. Click on the Anonymous check box and make sure that it is checked. Click on the
Save button to save the profile that you have just made. Now click on the
OK button.
- WS_FTP32 is now the available window. The left side of the WS_FTP32 window is named Local System (your computer), and the right side is named Remote System (the computer you are connected to).
- The Remote System side of the WS_FTP32 window contains a list of options. Locate the folder named pub and double click on it. Now you will need to double-click on each of the following folders: communicator, english, 4.76, windows, windows95_or_nt, complete_install, and finally double-click on the cc32d476.exe file to start the download. A progress bar will appear on the screen; when it reaches 100% it will disappear and the download will be complete. Now click on the
Close button in the lower left corner of the WS_FTP32 window.
- Next, single click on the file that you just downloaded, cc32d476.exe. Then click on the button labeled
Exec to start the installation.
Download Fetch - Macintosh OS 8.0 or higher
- To download Netscape Communicator with Fetch, you must first have a connection established to the CMU Network. To do this you must use
PPP (“Remote Access” for versions newer than 8.1)
- Open the Fetch program.
- The “New Connection” window appears. In the Host: box, type ftp.netscape.com; next click in the User ID: box and type in Anonymous. Click in the Password: box and type in guest. Make sure that the last box is cleared out. Now click on the
OK button.
- The window that appears will list the available directories. Locate the word
"pub" and double-click on it. Then, double-click on each of the following names: communicator, english, 4.76, mac, complete_install.
Lastly, double-click on the Comm4.76_Complete_US.bin file to start the download.
- A window will appear and ask you where you would like to save the file.
Choose the "Desktop", and click Save.
- After the file is done downloading, close the Fetch program and find the Comm4.76_Complete_US file on the desktop.
Double-click on this file to begin extracting the install files. Click
Continue, and then make sure that the file will be saved to the Desktop. Now click on
Save. This starts the decompression of the Comm4.76_Complete_US.bin file.
- When you see the message window that says “UnStuffing was successful!”, click on
Quit. On the desktop you will find the Communicator 4.76 folder. Open this folder by double-clicking on it. Look for the *Start Here* file and double-click on it to start the installation. Click on
Continue, Accept, OK, then Install. From this point, you can follow the on screen instructions.
