Updating VirusScan for Windows 9x
The procedure to update the McAfee Software requires you to know:
  • How to save a download file.
You will be prompted to save a file, and it will be important to remember where the file was saved. We suggest you place the file in a temporary, unused folder (directory).

  • How to run the setup program.
This step is really quite easy. During this step, note where the setup program is installing the program files. You may need this later.

  • How to find files on your computer.
Additionally, if you did not note the folder where the McAfee files were installed, you may be required to find the location where the install program placed the McAfee AV program.

  • How to copy files.
Additionally, you may be required to copy files from one folder to another.
To update the McAfee AV (EXE) files, you will first need to download the appropriate VirusScan file from Help Desk Software Download Center.
  1. Save the download file to a folder on your hard drive. Note the location where the file is saved. We recommend that you save the file to a temporary, unused (empty) folder.

  2. When the download is complete, double-click on the file that you just downloaded. This will extract the setup program and files needed for the new installation.

  3. Double-click the setup.exe file. This will begin the process of installing the McAfee program on your machine.

  4. Follow the install directions. Some areas to note:

    • If you are upgrading the McAfee Ani-Virus software, you may be prompted to uninstall the old software before continuing. If is not mandatory that you uninstall first, but it is recommended.

    • During the install setup, you will be prompted for typical or custom setup. You may want to select custom to review what McAfee options will be installed. Some people will want to deselect the ScreenScan option.

    • The setup program is from McAfee, and the data files (DAT) that come with the program may be out of date. After the install is complete, you may need to install the latest data (DAT) files.

  5. When prompted to restart the machine, proceed and let the machine restart.

  6. Check to see that you have the most recent data (DAT) files.

    • Right-click on the V on the icon tray on your task bar.

    • Select About and note the Virus definitions version.

    • Check to see that the Virus Definition file is the same (last 4 digits) as the most recent version.

Updating Data Files for VirusScan
The files CLEAN.DAT, NAMES.DAT, and SCAN.DAT all provide virus information to the VirusScan software. These are the data files.

New viruses are discovered at a rate of more than 100 per month. Often, these newer viruses are not detected using the older data files. Virus researchers are laboring constantly to update the files with more and newer virus definitions.
  1. Download the file from this site. At the end of this document you can down load the file.

  2. Decompress the file. This file is a self-extracting file which contains:

    • Scan.dat
    • clean.dat
    • names.dat
    • mcalyze.dat (version 3.x scan engines)
    • Some other less important files

  3. Find the directories where the software is currently loaded. (Typically C:\MCAFEE\VIRUSCAN for Win 3.x users and \ProgramFiles\McAfee\VirusScanXX for Win 95 and Win NT users where XX is either 95 or NT respectively.) This will vary depending on the version of the software you currently have.

  4. Copy the new files (the three mentioned above) into the directory or directories overwriting the current (outdated) data files.

  5. Note: There may data files in more than one directory. If so, place the updated data files into each directory. To locate the files from Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, from the desktop click Start > Find > Files or Folders. Enter the name of the file you are looking for and click Find Now. For Windows 3.x and Windows NT versions before 4.0, use File Manager to locate these files.

  6. Reboot the computer so the changes take place immediately.
Note! Some .DAT files require the most recent version of the AntiVirus engine.
