To
download McAfee VirusScan virus protection on a Windows PC, use the
following instructions:
- 1. Go to CMU's "Software Download Center" Web page:
http://www.oit.cmich.edu/secured/helpdesk_download_ctr.asp
Log in using your CMU Global ID and password.

Under the heading Windows PC Virus Protection, click appropriate
version for your operating system to begin downloading:
Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista: VirusScan Enterprise (Version 8.5i)
Windows 95/98/ME: VirusScan Multiplatform (Version 4.5.1)
Log in using your Global ID and password.
- 3. If prompted to "Run/Open" or "Save", click the Save
button, and save the file to your Desktop.
- 4. The file that is downloaded is in a compressed ZIP format
and must be expanded before the installation can proceed. While
Windows XP has built in ZIP support, users of other versions of
Windows will need to download a third-party application such as
WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/)
To decompress:
Windows Vista (without WinZip
installed):
- Double-click the VSE850LML file on your desktop
- From the menu toolbar, click the Extract all files button
- From the Extraction Wizard window, click the Extract
button
- Windows will automatically select a folder to extract the files
to. Click the Next button
- The files will be decompressed. This process could take a few
minutes, dependant on the speed of your computer
- Proceed with the installation instructions for McAfee VirusScan
8.5i for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista
Windows XP (without WinZip installed):
- Double-click the VSE850LML file on your desktop
- From the File menu, click Extract All
- From the Extraction Wizard window, click the Next button
- Windows will automatically select a folder to extract the
files to. Click the Next button
- The files will be decompressed. This process could take a few
minutes, dependant on the speed of your computer
- After the extraction is complete, check the Show extracted
files checkbox (if it isn’t already) and click Finish
- Proceed with the installation instructions for McAfee VirusScan
8.5i for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista
All versions of Windows with WinZip installed:
- Double-click the ZIP file you downloaded to your desktop
(VSE850LML for Windows NT/2000/XP, VSC451LENS for Windows 9x/ME)
- If the "WinZip Wizard" opens, click the WinZip Classic button
- Click the Action menu, and then click Extract
- Select your Desktop as the "Extract To:" location, and then
create a new folder called "VirusScan" to which the files will be
extracted to
- Be certain to select the "All files/folders in archive" option
- Click the Extract button
- Once the extraction is complete, close WinZip
- From your desktop, double-click the new "VirusScan" folder
- Proceed with the installation instructions for McAfee for
your operating system
Installing McAfee VirusScan 8.5i (Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista)
- Double-click Setup to begin installation
- If you are prompted to remove an older version of VirusScan
before continuing, select Yes
- Once the VirusScan Wizard appears, choose Next
- Choose 2 year subscription in the drop-down menu located
under License expiry type. Accept the license agreement then
click OK
- If prompted due to an older version of McAfee, uncheck the
preserve settings box, then select Next
- Make sure Typical is selected then click Next
- Make sure Standard Protection is selected and click
Next
- Select Install
- Click the Finish button.
- A reminder will appear, indicating that the network driver
was installed but is not yet loaded. Click the Ok button
- Restart your computer
Installing McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1 (Windows 95/98/ME)
- Double-click Setup to begin installation
- Once the McAfee Setup screen loads, choose Next
- Choose the radio button to agree with the license agreement,
then click Next
- Uncheck the "preserve scan settings" option, then click Next
- Choose "Typical Installation" (if necessary), then click Next
- Click Install
- Make sure to keep all boxes checked on the Completing McAfee
Virus Scan Setup screen, then click Next
- Keep the checkmark in the box stating, "Start VirusScan". Click
Finish
- Go to Start>Programs>Network Associates>VirusScan
Console
- Double click on AutoUpdate
- 11. Select the Schedule tab
- Place a checkmark in the box to the left of Enable
- Choose "Daily" from the list of Run options
- Click OK and close the VirusScan Console
- Restart your computer
