Functionality and Access
Filebank (aka File Bank) is a system to store files too large to transfer via e-mail. The Filebank utility allows you to share files up to 50MB (52,428,800 bytes) without sending the files as attachments in your email. This is particularly useful if file sizes are large and may cause mailboxes to go over their size quotas.

The bank provides two deposit methods. A "non authenticated" deposit requires a valid e-mail address and is designed to allow people without a Central ID to deposit files (an outside person returning an updated database or document, for example). Non authenticated deposits exist in the bank for a maximum of 3 days. An "authenticated" deposit requires a Central ID. Authenticated deposits can remain in the bank for up to 14 days. Central Michigan University mail users should use the "authenticated deposit" option when depositing a file.

After a user makes a deposit, Filebank emails the user a "receipt." This receipt includes the file ID for the deposited file and a password for the file. The ID and password can then be e-mailed to another user so he or she can retrieve the file.

To retrieve a file, a user requests a file ID and gives a password. The file is delivered to the user's machine. A popup window appears asking the user where to place the file. Files remain in Filebank until the time period (either 3 or 14 days) expires.

You can access Filebank by visiting: http://webs.cmich.edu/filebank/
To deposit files you need Microsoft Internet Explorer v4.x or greater or Netscape Navigator v3.x or greater.

Making a Non Authenticated File Deposit
A Non Authenticated deposit allows people without a Central ID to deposit files. Files remain in the system for 3 days. This method requires a valid e-mail address.

Click on the Deposit File (Non Authenticated) link, then do the following:

  1. Select the file you want to deposit by entering the full pathname of the file. Use the Browse button to navigate to the file in order to find the complete path.
  2. Enter an email address. The email address you supply will receive a notice with the confirmation number and password needed to retrieve this file. (See Retrieving a File, below.)
  3. Click the Submit button.
  4. Remember, the file stays in Filebank for just 3 days.

Making an Authenticated File Deposit
An authenticated deposit requires a Central Michigan University ID. Authenticated deposits can remain in the bank for 14 days. Central Michigan University mail users should use this option when depositing a file.

Click on the "Deposit File (Authenticated)" link, then do the following:
  1. Enter your Global ID and Password.
  2. Click the Submit button.
  3. Enter the full pathname of the file you are depositing. Use the Browse button to navigate to the file in order to find the complete path.
  4. Enter an email address. The email address you supply will receive a notice with the confirmation number and password needed to retrieve this file. (See Retrieving a File, below.)
  5. Click the Submit button.
  6. Remember, the file stays in Filebank for 14 days.

Retrieving a File
To retrieve a file from Filebank, click the "Retrieve File" button, then do the following:

  1. Enter the Filebank confirmation number and password provided in the email sent to you by the file's depositor.
  2. Click the Submit button.
  3. In the popup window that appears, indicate where to place the file on your local machine.
