CMU maintains high-speed Internet connections in all classrooms, offices, and dormitories, as well as many public access sites (e.g., the library).

Connecting from Residence Halls
ResNet (visit http://www.reslife.cmich.edu/ for system requirements, network card information, and setup requests) is the Ethernet network running throughout CMU’s residence halls. The residence halls are wired for one network jack per “pillow”. Prior to the beginning of the fall semester, ResNet connection teams assist students in scheduling and connecting their computer to this network. The University currently provides Ethernet access for free. There is no initial fee for the network connection, unless a problem exists that is above and beyond the normal hook-up. Each student must supply his or her own computer, network card and network cabling. All IP addresses are assigned dynamically.

University Apartments
All University Apartments are wired for Ethernet access. The apartments are wired one network jack per bedroom. The University currently provides Ethernet access for free. There is no initial fee for the network connection, unless a problem exists that is above and beyond the normal hook-up. Each student must supply his or her own computer, network card and network cabling. All IP addresses are assigned dynamically.

Connecting from Park Library / Campus Offices (Ethernet)
Park Library has many available network jacks for plugging in your laptop for additional research. These network jacks are scattered around the library. All academic and administrative buildings are connected to the campus network. If there is a need to hook up additional systems in these buildings, contact the IT Help Desk, 774-3662, for assistance.

Off-Campus Network Options (DSL, ISDN, modem: PC/Mac)

Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available. Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See ISP FAQs and Local ISP List for replacement service information.

Dial up is provided through the MichNet Shared Dial-In Program. Through this system, a local call can be made from just about anywhere in Michigan using your CMU credentials to get access to the campus network or the Internet. Local numbers can be obtained at the site: <http://www.merit.edu/>. CMU also provides ISDN and DSL service through Verizon. These services connect you directly to the CMU network. Contact the IT Service Center, Woldt Hall, Lower Level, 774-3091, to arrange for these services.

Wireless
Wireless access is provided by the Office of Information Technology to allow for seamless roaming for mobile users in the areas where the service is provided. Wireless network cards should be WiFi compliant. All access points support 802.11A, B and G.

CMICH_OPEN is the broadcast SSID for the general wireless access. After you select CMICH_OPEN, bring up your web browser and it should be redirected to a login screen. The user’s global ID and password are needed to authenticate. The user’s authentication credentials are encrypted but the rest of the traffic is not unless the applications have encryption built in (e.g. going to a secure web site (lock is closed in your web browser)).
