If I am interested in purchasing a computer through CMU, who should I contact?
The CMU Purchasing Department can help you with any questions or assistance you may need to purchase a computer through Central Michigan University. Contact Purchasing Services at (989) 774-3929 or visit their site: CMU Purchasing Services Computer FAQs.

Does my association with CMU provide me any discounts on hardware?
Yes, University Purchasing Services currently has personal purchasing agreements with the following vendors:

  • Apple (800) 780-5609
    https://ssl.cmich.edu/apple/
Apple pricing sheets are available in the Purchasing Services office
  • Compaq Contact any authorized Compaq reseller.
  • Dell Phone (800)-274-1410, extension 88700
    Dell online store
  • Gateway Phone (800) 846-2754, extension 55146 or 55625
  • IBM
    Contact any authorized IBM reseller

When calling vendors, tell them you are currently a CMU student or faculty/staff member. The vendor will assist you with your selection of discounted computers and pricing information. Each vendor has a different selection of computers with specific pricing information. For more information, contact CMU Purchasing Services at (989) 774-3929 or visit their site: CMU Purchasing Services or Personal Computer Purchases.

Can I buy my office computer through a company other than CMU?
Yes, but CMU does not recommend this practice. These machines are set up for home use and often have multiple "home type" software packages that deplete the amount of hard drive space available for business applications. In addition, adding Ethernet cards can be problematic, and the computer's "life" is based on home usage hours rather than business hours. For more information, please contact Purchasing at (989) 774-3929 or visit their site: CMU Purchasing Services.

I am interested in a package for home use, but am not a regular faculty or staff member; am I entitled to any discounts?
Yes, most software vendors offer academic discounts on their software. While some of the local software resellers will honor academic pricing, the software is usually marked at the normal resale price, and you need inquire about any special pricing discounts. The CMU Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Bovee University Center, has academic prices (when available) marked on the box. You can contact the Bookstore by phone at (989) 774-7493 (toll free: 800-283-0234) or visit their site: CMU Bookstore.
